Investigator Passports: Update in Progress

After a long hiatus, gathering some feedback, acquiring some additional software, and a fair bit of work… I’m finally close to releasing a major update for the Investigator Passports.

But first, the bad news.  I’m going to need to increase the price for these moving forward.  Making money off of these was never a goal, but some of the improvements I’ve made require me to get some additional subscription-based software plugins.  So I will be increasing the price in the near future to help slightly offset the additional monthly cost.

But on the flip side, these improvement and additional software should allow me to more easily add more countries and other elements moving forward.  So hopefully, more frequent and substantive updates.

Here’s what’s coming in the update:

  • So the most obvious difference is the inclusion of blank pages for Visa stamps.  This was a highly requested feature.  Each passport will have 2 blank Visa pages, but these are entirely optional.  If you want to print a character sheet on the backside as in the original design, you still can.  If you want the Visa pages, just print two-sided and make one extra cut.  That’s it.  You get two Visa pages with everything held together and are still only using one sheet of paper.  (Ignoring the sloppy cut, you can see the first test print of this design below.)
  • Additional fields – I’ve added quite a few more fields to support passports from more countries.  More characteristics, travel destination, places of birth, children’s names, etc.  These are still all filled out on the first couple of pages and seamlessly appear on your chosen passport.
  • Security stamps on photos – Many passports in the 20s and 30s made use of ink stamps on top of photos as a security feature.  I’ve figured out a way to incorporate these while still allowing you to load your own photo.  I think this makes those passports look much more realistic.  You can see an example in the photos below.  Of course, these stamps were often specific to the city or region where the passport was issued.  Fortunately, the way I’ve done this allows you to choose a stamp in much the same way you would the photo itself.  So you could choose between two different German photo stamps, for example.
  • And I’m adding more countries.  The new list will include: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Indian Empire, Australia, Argentina, China, France, Germany, Italy, South Africa, and the USSR.
  • Sample photos – I’m also planning to include a selection of period-appropriate passport photos for each country.  Just an optional tool so you can include more realistic photos if you want.  Note that these photos will be AI-generated.  That way they do not portray any actual people.

So that’s where I’m at and what should be coming soon.  Please share any thoughts or questions.

Investigator Passports: Feature Survey

Looking at some ideas for the Investigator Passport props, and I’m at that point where I need to have a better idea of how people are actually using them at their table. Stuff like if people actually use the ability to print the character sheet on the inside, or if it’s just used as a prop alongside a conventional character sheet.

Anyway, I put together a quick 5-question survey to gather info. I’ll be using this to help decide if (and how) I should add options like blank pages for visa stamps/stickers, or if I should just focus on adding more countries.

Let your thoughts be known, and thanks!

Yog-Sothoth and Site Updates

Yog-Sothoth November 2019

I continue to be amazed at the reception my Investigator Passports have received, and now they have been included in Yog-Sothoth’s November newsletter!

If you haven’t ever checked out Yog-Sothoth, you should definitely give it a look. You’ll find a large and active community dedicated to exploring Lovecraftian worlds of all types. The site does require you to register to access most of the site, but doing so is free.

Site Updates

I’ve spent some time over the last day or so making some small updates to the website. Most of this is just maintenance and backend updates to the theme or plugins. However, I’ve also added a couple of things. A separate project page is now dedicated to gaming tools and props – including the Investigator Handouts – and I’ve added a section on the Community page that links to projects that others in the Mythos community are working on or have already published.

Investigator Passports Available for Download

I recently posted photos of passports I created for my investigators – which then unfold to reveal their character sheet. The response I received was quite positive, and some people asked if they were available for purchase or via Kickstarter. These are actually very easy to make at home using the template I’ve created.

These passports are very simple and have no impact on gameplay – they’re just props to add a little immersion. Using the form-fillable PDF, you enter the details for the character, then scroll through the pages of the document. Each page shows the information you provided on the passport for a different country. Pick which one you want and print that page on your color printer. Fold the page into quarters, trim off the white edges, and you have your very own investigator passport. If you print it on the back of your character sheet, then simply unfold the passport to reveal the passport for play.

These are based on real-world passports from the 1920s and 1930s. A little artistic license was taken to make things simple, but otherwise I tried to make these look as authentic as possible. The template produces passports from the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, and India.

The PDF is quite large, nearly 48 MB, but that may be unavoidable without compromising the image quality and form fields. I’ve decided to make the template available through DriveThruRPG. (I’ve had a publisher account for years, but never used it for much.) The main reasons for this are to ensure people can access the file without relying on my web admin skills and to get updates if I post new versions in the future. As suggested to me after I posted the photos, the template is posted as a Pay What You Want product. I’m not looking to make money on these, but evidently there are those that would be willing to pay for them. A few extra dollars never hurts, and maybe it will enable me to offer more in the future.
