Sector F6 is a working name for an effort to develop a system that allows for the seamless transition between tabletop roleplaying and more strategic forms of tabletop gameplay. This will be developed primarily for use alongside Proteus to allow for greater options to explore the world of Ortellum, but may be adapted to other settings.
Strategy game is a generic reference to a wide variety of tabletop games, including everything from simulation & exploration to city- & civilization-building to wargaming and miniatures.
Roleplaying games encompass a broad range of genres and play styles, but typically revolve around storytelling with players taking on the roles of individual characters.
The concept behind this project originated with the development of the Proteus tabletop roleplaying game.
The general idea is to create a system that includes rules for both the strategy and roleplaying games, all structured around a unified set of core mechanics. This system could then be expanded and customized for different settings.
By way of example, consider the Battletech universe and the different levels of gameplay that could exist within it:
- The highest level of strategic play could encompass dozens of planets throughout the Inner Sphere.
- The next level down (still strategic, or perhaps operational) would be gameplay focusing on a single planet.
- Next down would be the tactical level of a single battlefield.
- Finally, the most detailed level would be roleplaying individual characters.
Of course, not all games would require all levels of play, and some might actually benefit from more, but this gives you a basic idea.
This will most likely expand on the existing Proteus ruleset using Fate Core.
